Chronicles of the Guardians · Chapter 04

The Judgment of Heaven

J. K. García

The Father's Dominions had never known silence.

Since creation began, the heavens had been filled with the songs of angels, the murmur of stars, and the harmony born of the Creator's presence.

But that day… no one sang.

The Thirteen Guardians crossed the vast Celestial Kingdom in silence.

Tarus walked at the front, carrying Zakiel's lifeless body in his arms. Leo, Nerea, and Agnis followed him. The eight lesser Guardians came behind them with bowed heads.

And Lucero walked last.

He wore no chains.

He was not a prisoner.

He was a son of the Father.

Yet none of his brothers and sisters dared to walk beside him.

When they reached the Throne of Eternity, they all fell to their knees.

All… except Lucero.

The Father sat upon His throne of light. There was no anger on His face. Only a sorrow so deep that it seemed to envelop all creation.

His eyes rested on Zakiel's body. With a simple gesture of His hand, the slain angel was enveloped in white light. His wounds vanished. Peace returned to his face.

The Father slowly closed His eyes.

“Welcome home, My son.”

Then He looked up at Lucero.

For several seconds, neither spoke. Father and son regarded one another in absolute silence.

At last, the Father asked, His voice filled with pain:

“Why, My son?”

Lucero held His gaze. He did not bow his head. He showed no remorse.

“Because it had become necessary.”

A murmur passed through the celestial hall.

The Father slowly descended from His throne. Light blossomed beneath His feet with every step. He stopped before Lucero.

Close enough to embrace him.

But He did not.

“I gave you life. I taught you to love. I trusted you more than any of your brothers and sisters. Where did I fail?”

Lucero was silent for a moment. Then he answered calmly.

“You never failed. I am the one who changed.”

Leo looked up in surprise. Nerea stopped weeping for an instant. Even Tarus felt a flicker of hope.

But Lucero's next words shattered that hope.

“I realized that we were created for far more than obedience.”

The Father remained silent.

Lucero continued.

“We are immortal. We are the most powerful beings in creation. Why must we live forever subject to Your will? Why can we never choose our own destiny? Why must we bow before You?”

His voice began to rise.

“Why can we not rule?”

His final words echoed throughout the Celestial Kingdom.

No one dared to answer.

Until Tarus stepped forward.

“Because He does not force us. He loves us.”

Lucero slowly turned his head.

“You speak like an obedient son. I speak as someone who has opened his eyes.”

Agnis could contain herself no longer. Her sword appeared, wreathed in blue flames.

“Enough!”

Her voice echoed across Heaven.

“Our Father has never treated us as slaves. He gave us a purpose. He gave us a family. He gave us a home. And you answer Him by murdering one of our brothers.”

Lucero looked at her sword.

“Are you going to kill me?”

Agnis clenched her fist. The flames rose.

But slowly, she lowered the blade.

“No. Because you are still my brother.”

At those words, Leo closed his eyes in sorrow. Nerea began to weep again.

The Father looked upon His children.

They were all suffering.

All of them.

Even Lucero.

For behind his pride, a wounded heart still remained.

The Father spoke again.

“Lucero… you can still return.”

The silence was absolute. Even the stars seemed to await his answer.

Lucero lowered his gaze.

For the first time since the judgment began… memories stirred within him.

He remembered the first time the Father held him. Flying with Leo among the first stars. Training with Agnis. Nerea healing his wounds after his first battle. Tarus embracing him after a difficult mission.

For an instant… his eyes shone as they once had.

Leo took a small step toward him.

“Brother… come home.”

Nerea held out a hand.

“We still love you.”

Even Agnis spoke.

“None of us wants to lose you.”

The silence seemed to herald a miracle.

Lucero drew a deep breath. Tears welled in his eyes.

They all believed he would return.

But then… he heard another voice.

It did not come from outside.

It rose from within him.

A voice he had fed for millions of years.

If you return… you will be only a son again.

If you go on… you could become a king.

Lucero slowly raised his head. The tears vanished. His expression hardened once more.

He looked at the Father.

And smiled.

It was not a smile of happiness.

It was the smile of someone who had already made his choice.

“I will never kneel again.”

A deep pain pierced the heart of everyone present.

The Father closed His eyes. A single tear ran down His face.

The first tear the universe had ever seen its Creator shed.

“Then… you have chosen your own path.”

Tarus fell to his knees. Leo buried his face in his hands. Nerea wept inconsolably. Agnis drove her sword into the ground to contain the fury that threatened to consume her.

After a long silence, the Father spoke again.

“I love you all equally. Even now. Even you, Lucero. I will never stop loving you. But love cannot exist without justice.”

He looked at His four faithful children.

“My children… I cannot decide your brother's fate. My love for him is too great. You will decide his punishment. Not as judges. But as his brothers and sisters.”

A heavy silence settled over the Celestial Kingdom.

No one wished to speak.

No one wished to condemn the brother with whom they had shared eternity.

At last, Tarus stepped forward. His voice trembled.

“Father… if that is Your will… I will speak for us all.”

He looked at Lucero. There was no hatred in his eyes. Only immense pain.

“Brother… I love you with all my heart. But you have shed innocent blood. You sought to take our Father's place. And you have sown division in our family.”

He drew a deep breath. Every word seemed to tear at his soul.

“For the sake of all creation… you will be exiled from the Father's Dominions. You will live far from the light… until you choose to repent.”

The entire hall fell silent.

The Father closed His eyes.

He accepted the decision.

Lucero let out a long laugh. Then he looked at the Father one last time.

“Do not call me Lucero again. That name meant Your light. Your hope. Your pride. That name died today.”

He slowly spread his wings.

The star that shone in his chest began to darken. White light became black fire. The feathers of his wings lost their golden radiance.

The entire universe trembled.

“From this moment… my name shall be… Lucifer.”

Dark lightning split the sky.

Light had chosen to become darkness.

And with that new name… the Judgment of Heaven ended.

But a war began that would shape the destiny of all creation.
