Chronicles of the Guardians · Chapter 02

The Age of Light

J. K. García

Millions of years passed after the birth of the Thirteen Guardians.

The universe never ceased to grow. New stars lit the vastness. Entire planets rose from cosmic dust and vanished when their time came to an end.

And the Father's children watched over all creation.

That era would forever be remembered as the Age of Light.

There were no wars.

There was no hatred.

There was no death born of evil.

There was only creation… and those who protected it.

The Thirteen Guardians traveled to the farthest reaches of the universe, fulfilling the Father's will.

Lucero led the way.

His light crossed entire galaxies and restored hope wherever the natural darkness of the cosmos seemed eternal. The peoples of countless worlds lifted their eyes whenever he appeared.

They called him the Dawn-Bearer.

The First Son.

The Father's Favorite.

Lucero always answered with a humble smile.

At least, in the beginning.

Leo walked behind him. Laughter, music, and flowers blooming even in the most barren deserts heralded his arrival. Children ran to meet him. The elderly found hope again. Broken hearts found comfort simply in hearing his voice.

“As long as one smile remains, darkness will never triumph,” he often said.

Nerea traveled across infinite oceans and through ancient forests. She healed wounded creatures. She restored continents devastated by natural disasters. With a single tear, she could bring an entire forest back to life.

That was why everyone knew her as the Mother of Compassion.

Agnis was different.

Wherever a threat to creation arose, she was there. Her sword burned with blue fire that never touched the innocent. It consumed only what was born of chaos.

She did not fight for glory.

She fought so that others would never have to.

And when the battle ended, she sheathed her sword once more.

For she had never taken pleasure in war.

Tarus was the quietest of them all.

While his brothers and sisters traveled among the stars, he raised mountains, rebuilt cities destroyed by natural disasters, and protected entire worlds with his own hands. He was so strong that he could hold a planet steady while the Father finished shaping it.

But his greatest strength did not lie in his muscles.

It lay in his heart.

He was always the first to help and the last to leave. That was why every angel trusted him.

Not only for his power.

But for his goodness.

During that age, the five siblings were inseparable. They laughed together. They trained together. They traveled together. And when they returned to the Father's Dominions, they shared long conversations beneath the Tree of Eternity.

Leo did most of the talking. Nerea listened with a smile. Agnis corrected Leo's exaggerations. Lucero laughed. And Tarus watched his brothers and sisters with pride.

They seemed like a perfect family.

But even in the brightest heaven, small cracks can appear.

As the millennia passed, the inhabitants of countless worlds began to speak more of Lucero than of any other Guardian. Whenever a civilization was saved, they spoke his name. Whenever a star shone again, they thanked the Light-Bearer.

Even some of the eight lesser Guardians began to see him as the true leader of Heaven.

Lucero had never asked for such admiration.

But neither did he reject it.

On the contrary…

He began to enjoy it.

One afternoon, as they watched a new galaxy being born, Leo approached him.

“Brother, they say you are the most beautiful angel the Father has ever created.”

Lucero smiled.

“Do they?”

“Yes. But I think they exaggerate.”

Lucero gave a quiet laugh.

“And who do you think is the most beautiful?”

Leo gestured toward the vast universe.

“Our Father.”

Lucero fell silent.

It was a simple answer.

Yet something within him remained dissatisfied.

That night, while the others rested, Lucero stood alone, contemplating his reflection upon an ocean of stars. For the first time, he did not look at creation.

He looked at himself.

“I am the first…”

“The most powerful…”

“The closest to the Father…”

His words faded into the silence of the universe.

And yet… someone heard them.

Tarus.

The immense Guardian had come looking for his brother. He said nothing. He simply stood and watched.

When Lucero noticed him, he smiled as he always had.

“Is something wrong, brother?”

Tarus shook his head.

“No.”

But there was something strange in his eyes. An unease he had never felt before.

Days became centuries. Centuries became millennia. And that tiny spark of pride continued to grow.

It was almost invisible.

Lucero still obeyed the Father. He still protected creation. He still embraced his brothers and sisters.

No one suspected anything.

No one… except Tarus.

One morning during training, the two crossed swords in friendly practice. After a long fight, Lucero defeated Tarus.

The others applauded. Leo threw up his hands in delight.

“Our brother is still invincible!”

Everyone laughed.

Everyone… except Tarus.

As he sheathed his sword, he watched Lucero. It was not the victory that troubled him.

It was the expression on his brother's face.

For an instant… he did not see joy.

He saw pride.

That same night, Tarus went before the Father. He found Him contemplating the vastness of the universe.

“Father…”

The Father smiled without turning from the stars.

“What is it, My son?”

Tarus lowered his head.

“I am afraid.”

The Father slowly turned toward him.

“Of what?”

Tarus drew a deep breath before answering.

“Of losing my brother.”

Silence filled the place.

The Father closed His eyes, as though those words had confirmed a fear He had carried for a very long time.

“I know it too, My son.”

Tarus looked up in surprise.

“Then… You have seen it too?”

The Father slowly nodded.

“Since the day he was created.”

Tarus felt his chest tighten.

“Then why do You do nothing?”

The Father rested a hand upon His son's shoulder.

“Because love does not compel. Love waits. It trusts. And it always leaves the door open for you to return.”

Tarus remained silent. He did not fully understand the Father's words.

But he chose to trust.

Meanwhile… many worlds away, Lucero gazed upon an immense legion of angels who watched him with admiration.

And for the first time… their admiration began to matter more to him than the will of his own Father.

Without Lucero realizing it… the first seed of rebellion had already taken root.

And very soon… Heaven would witness its first bloodshed.
